Persona 4 Golden review: An offbeat RPG classic comes to PS Vita
by admin on Mar.12, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking Persona 4 Golden was simply a trope filled Japanese RPG based around a school, teenagers and relationships, full of all the old anime cliches. But it really isn’t and underneath the facade is in fact an amazingly well balanced game.
First of all we have to come clean: we hadn’t actually played any of the Persona series before this and we were more than a little sceptical about the ideas behind it. A team of Japanese school children try to solve mysteries in their town by travelling inside a television to fighting figments of their own imaginations, all the time becoming stronger by making more friends? Not for us. But we’ll admit, we were wrong.
The basics
As mentioned, the basic idea behind Person 4 Golden is that you play a teenager who has moved away from his parents to stay with his detective uncle in the sleepy Japanese town of Inaba. However, as soon as you arrive people start turning up dead and it becomes your job, along with the other characters you meet and befriend along the way, to find out who or what is doing it and try to stop them. You achieve this through social interactions in the town and through fighting in the TV.
The social aspect is all about building up friendships by speaking to and spending time with various characters in the town, as you try to gather evidence about the murders that have been occurring. However, you only have a certain amount of time each day to do each activity, so it’s up to you to choose who you spend it with. These relationships then gradually level up as you spend more time on them, making you stronger in the other half of the game, the combat half, which takes place in a TV.
Violence on TV
The reason you travel into a TV to fight your enemies is explained thoroughly in the game and we wouldn’t want to ruin it for you here, so we’ll just say that there is a valid reason and it kind of makes sense. While in the TV the combat is turn-based, with you controlling up to four different characters. These characters can be equipped with all the usual armour and weapons (albeit with a high school twist) that are slowly upgraded during the game, but they also have special magical entities that imbue them with skills and powers, called Persona, that level up and increase in power during the game.
However, while other characters you control can only have one of these Persona, your main character can equip many at the same time, even mixing them together to form new ones. This process is linked to the relationships you made in the city, creating stronger Persona the better friendships you have.
Summary
In many ways Persona 4 Golden is a perfect RPG. The questing aspect in the city reveals a solid, involving plot with an adult sense of humour while the combat is well put together and rewarding. If there were any issues to be had it’s that at times it can be frustrating the time-limited social aspect means you don’t always get to do what you like, but it’s a minor gripe in an otherwise superb game.
P.S. For those of you familiar with the series, Persona 4 Golden takes the original Persona 4 that was released on the PlayStation 2 back in 2008 and both updates the graphics to PS Vita standard as well as adding 10 or so hours of new content.
Persona 4 Golden is out now on PS Vita.
