Actual comedy legend Mel Brooks was given a lifetime achievement award by the American Film Institute this week. As well as writing and directing some of the funniest films of all time (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, The Producers) his production company made The Elephant Man – which explains why David Lynch turned up to cheer on the 86-year-old, alongside Billy Crystal, Martin Scorsese, Martin Short, Sarah Silverman, Cary Elwes, Amy Poehler and Susanna Hoffs.

There’s some things in life you should just never have to witness. Your mum on the toilet, The Wanted live in concert and, worst of all, David Beckham crying. Becks played his last ever football match at the weekend, in what was essentially 90 minute long David Beckham love-in where he cried his little eyes out in front of everyone. It was beautiful.
