John Carter had everything going for it. Firstly, the book it’s based on is still popular 100 years after it was written, which isn’t a bad period of time for any book to last, but doubly impressive for a science fiction novel. Secondly, the director Andrew Stanton was responsible for writing and directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E, both of which won Academy Awards, and finally, it had a huge special effects budget. Seriously huge.

After seeing the trailer earlier in the week you’ll be pleased to hear that last night was the premiere of John Carter in London. It also appeared to double as a convention for acting heavyweights who love a nice sharp suit. The film is about the John Carter of the title (Taylor Kitsch), as a Civil War vet who finds himself transplanted to Mars, where he discovers as well as Mars being very aesthetically pleasing and inhabited by 12-foot tall green Barbarians. He finds himself a prisoner of the creatures, but manages to escape only to find a princess in desperate need of a saviour.
