Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate review: Oh, so that’s what they’ve all been playing in Japan
by admin on Apr.03, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
Some games take a little while to explain. Not the Monster Hunter series. It’s right there in the title. You might even think there were some subtle nuances or possibly just normal nuances being missed, but there really aren’t. It is simply a series concerned solely with the process of hunting monsters, and it’s huge in Japan. Mostly because these monsters are bloody difficult to kill, and there’s only one thing our oriental gaming pals like more than a spiky haired protagonist and that’s an unbelievably steep learning curve.
It’s probably for these very same reasons that Monster Hunter as a series has always had a pretty patchy reception in the West, however. Well, that along with a couple of other shortcomings – including an odd user interface and a notoriously difficult camera system.
For anyone prepared to get engaged though, there is a phenomenally rewarding game waiting underneath. For the people who haven’t played any games in the monster hunter series, the core mechanics involve blundering into battle and attempting to slay enormous beasts with woefully inadequate armour. This equipment can be made slightly less inadequate by beating the monsters and carving off their appendages, making grisly but strangely rewarding pieces of clothing, weaponry and jewellery. The core mechanic is very slick and compelling but it’ll take a few goes to beat a large monster and not die.
Each battle with a monster can last up to 50 minutes, and the monsters themselves have no health bar. The UI is distributed between the Wii U remote and the main screen, with the user being allowed to allocate key features to whichever screen they find most unobtrusive or convenient. The item combination, map reading and player interaction has been significantly improved for the Wii U version – the option to speak through the Wii U handheld screen has also been added for ease of swearing.
The monsters have been given a visual overhaul for this latest installment, with a bit more definition and a couple of extra behaviours. This is a big help when the only indicator of a monster’s health is its appearance and movement, so losing after 50 minutes of solid monster bashing should hopefully sting a little less than it did on the Wii version. The online system has also been given a bit of an overhaul with rooms being considerably easier to join, however if you’re playing on the 3DS version local multiplayer is your only option.
For fans of games like Dark Souls the unforgiving gameplay will feel great, while for the less initiated there’s some pretty comprehensive tutorial action. On the whole it’s a solid improvement on the previous Nintendo version, and with over 50 large monsters the dedicated player will have to play for several hundred hours to unlock all the content it holds.
