REVIEW: Dead Space 3: Space zombie killer returns for a third outing
by admin on Feb.18, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
If you enjoy the idea of shooting limbs off dead people in space with a gun you made yourself, then you’d expect to be in a very niche audience. Strangely though, when it comes to games you’re really not.
In Dead Space 3 you play the role of engineer Isaac Clarke, a man who you quickly discover is surprisingly rational given all the terrible things he’s seen. Unfortunately for Isaac, as space engineering isn’t a hugely exciting subject for a first-person shooter, your job quickly becomes focused heavily on killing crazy people and zombies in ventilation shafts rather than on designing space bridges.
The game itself is set slightly after the second, where you both got and then lost a girlfriend and as a result you’re living in seclusion in a forgotten apartment in the backend of an anonymous city in space. Unsurprisingly, it’s not that safe and you’re pretty much thrown in at the deep end from the get-go.
Starting with you being picked up and taken to safety by a group of soldiers, the game takes its first turn as another group calling themselves the Unitologists (space cultists) begin terrorizing your settlement by activating Markers, (ancient artefacts capable of destroying entire planets), which in turn bringing back the Necromorph (space zombies). From there on it’s pretty much all the shooting and heavy breathing you’ll ever need.
The big new feature advertised for Dead Space 3 was the ability to make your own weapons from assorted bits and bobs you find and collect throughout the game, and it’s here that developers Visceral really deliver. The extent of customisation is massive; if you want a line gun strapped to an assault rifle that fires electro-bullets then that’s exactly what you’ll get. It’s really enjoyable to make weapons with all the parts available, and satisfying when you find parts in the game; there are parts everywhere, but you can find raw materials with which you can make new parts for your guns.
As you’d expect, the guns in Dead Space 3 are very well done. The noise made by when you de-limb a rampaging Necromorph is exactly as visceral and shocking as it ever was. In fact, the sound for the whole game – from zombie screams to the music – is well made and well timed. Hardly surprising given the nature of genre, but when you’re creeping down a corridor and a high pitched wail suddenly comes out of nowhere, it’s still truly terrifying.
Dead Space 3′s atmosphere is set up (and kept in place) by the same technique they’ve used since the first game – a complete lack of on-screen information via HUD. One of the wisest choices to have ever been made in a horror game; it does something that very few games can – it makes it cinematic – which is vital to the success of the Dead Space series. Every menu (except the start menu) is integrated into the game as if it were a movie, nothing is clunky, and everything flows smoothly and follows the same holo-projection theme that one would expect from a game set far in the future.
Unfortunately the one feature really lacking here is, surprisingly, the storyline. Unoriginal and slow to get started (and for an action-horror game, this is pretty important) it makes it very hard to relate to any of the characters; Isaac has seen all manner of things, the love of his life killing herself, an unfathomably powerful alien weapon infecting his mind and forcing him to attempt suicide, he’s been betrayed by almost everyone he’s ever trusted, and all this is going on while he’s fighting a seemingly never ending zombie horde. The poor guy should be in a mental asylum smearing his crap over the walls; but no, he’s alive and kicking and weirdly in fact seems to be fairly unaffected by the whole experience (even though the main storyline insists he isn’t).
However, If you forget about the slightly lacklustre storyline and focus on the amazing limb-removing gameplay, Dead Space 3 is a superb addition to the series, in many ways better than the last two and certainly a game that’ll stay with you for a while. In a good way…
Out now on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
