Star Trek: LA premiere pics including Leonard bloody Nimoy
by admin on May.15, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
For the past eleven hundred years, there has been a premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness every single day, somewhere in the world. At least, that’s how it feels. In reality there’s probably only been about thirty or ninety premieres. And here’s a bunch of pictures from the latest one, which was last night in LA. Leonard Nimoy was there! That’s probably why they had another one, so Leonard could come and hang out. Why not, eh?

Mark Hamill doesnât want CGI in new Star Wars film. Says brilliant things
by admin on May.08, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
The good news about Star Wars VII keeps coming. Now Mark Hamill has spoken at length about what he DOESN’T want to see in the seventh film. In particular he favours models over CGI, and wants the action to be “age appropriate” to the cast. He also speaks highly of writer Michael Arndt. And with the rumour they’re going to shoot this outside in Scotland… it’s hard not to be as excited as an Ewok in a Scout Walker.

Star Trek film review: Cumberbatch is a brilliant Cumberbastard
by admin on May.07, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
In what is already shaping up to be a season of glitzy blockbusters with Iron Man 3, Elysium, Man of Steel, and Pacific Rim (LOL) all out at some point over the summer, the sequel to JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot really has its work cut out if it hopes to stand apart.
From that perspective, it’s nice to see that after a slightly Harry Potter-esque opening, we see the creative team really shift things up a gear since the last instalment. The vibrant colour palette and glossy art direction give the film a very distinctive, recognisable style; the blur transitions between shots and the shaky zoom effects are somewhat overused, but it wouldn’t be Star Trek without ‘em. This film looks gorgeous. I was however, worried for the wellbeing of my retinas after the 800th lens flare effect – some of them actually obscuring actors and set pieces, which is just ridiculous. Into Darkness my ass.
Chris Pine returns as Captain Kirk in all his shiny gormless glory; he’s pretty to look at but at points I was worried that he’d received an ad-hoc lobotomy during the film. Fortunately it was a false alarm, and it actually just turned out to be him attempting to convey feelings using his face. He’s good at what he does though; sex with aliens and pretending to be manly while drinking whiskey.
The dialogue is funny in the right places, leaving room for the more emotional scenes and the odd Star Trek in-joke – which should have seasoned Trekkies dribbling with delight -although these same quips are going to be be slightly alienating for those who aren’t pointy-eared obsessives. On the other hand, Spock’s famous apparent inability to feel real emotions is a genuinely funny mechanic with moving ramifications; his relationship with the rest of the crew becomes a vital component, driving the narrative.
Then we have Mr Cumberbatch. He really stands out in his bad-guy role, which I’ll say no more about, other than he’s surprisingly awesome. Like, really awesome. The intensity of his performance is gripping and his character’s back-story is an emotional one.
Simon Pegg is also Simon Pegg.
There are, however, quite stark comparisons to 9/11 and other terrorist threats, which is becoming a slightly tired social commentary popping up in big blockbusters left, right and centre. The unexpected twists and turns make these forgivable though, even leading to a couple of truly spectacular set-pieces to tie the action together.
If the rumours are true, JJ Abrams getting his hands on the Portal, Half Life, and Star Wars franchise could create the sci-fi auteur this generation so badly needs. Which is why I’ll happily say that Into Darkness is by far the most fun I’ve had at the movies since Year 11 and those poppers.
Also, fucking KLINGONS.
