Star Trek: LA premiere pics including Leonard bloody Nimoy

by admin on May.15, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

It's Leonard Nimoy!!! And he's doing the hand!!!

For the past eleven hundred years, there has been a premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness every single day, somewhere in the world. At least, that’s how it feels. In reality there’s probably only been about thirty or ninety premieres. And here’s a bunch of pictures from the latest one, which was last night in LA. Leonard Nimoy was there! That’s probably why they had another one, so Leonard could come and hang out. Why not, eh?

Star Trek film review: Cumberbatch is a brilliant Cumberbastard

by admin on May.07, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

In what is already shaping up to be a season of glitzy blockbusters with Iron Man 3, Elysium, Man of Steel, and Pacific Rim (LOL) all out at some point over the summer, the sequel to JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot really has its work cut out if it hopes to stand apart.

From that perspective, it’s nice to see that after a slightly Harry Potter-esque opening, we see the creative team really shift things up a gear since the last instalment. The vibrant colour palette and glossy art direction give the film a very distinctive, recognisable style; the blur transitions between shots and the shaky zoom effects are somewhat overused, but it wouldn’t be Star Trek without ‘em. This film looks gorgeous. I was however, worried for the wellbeing of my retinas after the 800th lens flare effect – some of them actually obscuring actors and set pieces, which is just ridiculous. Into Darkness my ass.

Chris Pine returns as Captain Kirk in all his shiny gormless glory; he’s pretty to look at but at points I was worried that he’d received an ad-hoc lobotomy during the film. Fortunately it was a false alarm, and it actually just turned out to be him attempting to convey feelings using his face. He’s good at what he does though; sex with aliens and pretending to be manly while drinking whiskey.

The dialogue is funny in the right places, leaving room for the more emotional scenes and the odd Star Trek in-joke – which should have seasoned Trekkies dribbling with delight -although these same quips are going to be be slightly alienating for those who aren’t pointy-eared obsessives. On the other hand, Spock’s famous apparent inability to feel real emotions is a genuinely funny mechanic with moving ramifications; his relationship with the rest of the crew becomes a vital component, driving the narrative.

Then we have Mr Cumberbatch. He really stands out in his bad-guy role, which I’ll say no more about, other than he’s surprisingly awesome. Like, really awesome. The intensity of his performance is gripping and his character’s back-story is an emotional one.

Simon Pegg is also Simon Pegg.

There are, however, quite stark comparisons to 9/11 and other terrorist threats, which is becoming a slightly tired social commentary popping up in big blockbusters left, right and centre. The unexpected twists and turns make these forgivable though, even leading to a couple of truly spectacular set-pieces to tie the action together.

If the rumours are true, JJ Abrams getting his hands on the Portal, Half Life, and Star Wars franchise could create the sci-fi auteur this generation so badly needs. Which is why I’ll happily say that Into Darkness is by far the most fun I’ve had at the movies since Year 11 and those poppers.

Also, fucking KLINGONS.

Look! It’s pics of Union J at the Star Trek premiere. Because they have nice faces

by admin on May.03, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

Union J and their faces

We have a difficult relationship with fans of boybands. We used to be ok with the McFly fans but then one of us said an album they made wasn’t very good and it all kicked off. The Wanted’s fans despise us but that’s ok because The Wanted are toilet. So we want to state now that unless Union J make a truly terrible record or say something very wrong then HOLY MOLY OFFICIALLY ENDORSES UNION J.

Star Trek Into Darkness cast pose for pics in Berlin. Fail to pull off Vulcan salute

by admin on Apr.29, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

Star Trek Into Darkness in Berlin

We reckon the closer the Star Trek Into Darkness cast get to Britain the more they’ll feature Simon Pegg in the photocalls. In America he’s just the funny Mr Bean English guy, but on this side of the “pond” he’s the main attraction. We don’t really know who those other people are. But they seem nice. However we’re more concerned with the cast’s complete failure to do a Vulcan salute when they posed for pics in Berlin this weekend. Or has Nimoy copyrighted it?

Star Trek (the game) review: Boldly going where hundreds have gone before

by admin on Apr.26, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

The phrase ‘the game of the film’ rightly fills most gamers with a sense of dread. It’s a genre composed almost entirely of shoddily-built paint-by-numbers marketing jobs commissioned by a studio more than happy to con eager parents into buying their kids a present even Tiny Tim would have trouble being grateful for. Yes, we’re talking about you, Family Guy and you, Battleship.

Star Trek, while no where near as bad as either of those luminary titles, certainly isn’t going to be reaching GoldenEye 64 status anytime soon. The game puts you in charge of either Chris Pine’s Kirk or Zachary Quinto’s Spock as they attempt to investigate a group of sentient aliens called the Gorn, a race infecting StarFleet with a bad thing that makes them do bad things.

Weirdly for a show that was mostly based around finding a non-violent solution to problems, you actually spend most of the game shooting (albeit with phasers on stun) pretty much everything that moves. If you’ve ever wondered whether Spock specialises in anything more martial than a Vulcan neck pinch then know you know – he’s also very keen on shooting people in the groin.

Having said that, despite the attempt to shoehorn an action game into a series that shouldn’t really ever be made into an action game, the plot is surprisingly enthralling. Penned by the same writer as God of War 2, there are points during Star Trek where you find yourself genuinely immersed in the storyline especially with Quinto and Pine voicing their respective characters, but sadly they are few and far between and it’s never too long before you’re yanked back to reality when your genius-level partner, a man who can supposedly accurately calculate the trajectory of stars, once again gets trapped behind a box.

Ending up as a patchwork of other more successful titles, Star Trek never quite becomes as terrible as some of the other dross (yes, Battleship again) released under the tie-in genre, but that’s not to say it’s worth playing. With a wealth of background material, it feels like it really could have been something a bit different. Sadly, despite the presence of some great voice acting and a strong storyline, Star Trek simply isn’t the game to change anyone’s mind about a genre that most would like to see die out as soon as possible.

On the plus side, it did make us want to go and watch the new film. Which in some ways is kind of the point, we suppose. IN WHICH CASE, KUDOS TO YOU STAR TREK THE GAME.

Star Trek (the game) is out 26th April on PS3, PC and Xbox 360. We reviewed the Xbox 360 edition.

Some nice photos of the Star Trek stars and Brad Pitt at CinemaCon 2013

by admin on Apr.16, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip

Chris Pine, Alice Eve and Brad Pitt

The first day of CinemaCon 2013 in Las Vegas saw the cast of Star Trek Into Darkness, Zachary Quinto, Alice Eve, Chris Pine and John Cho larking about. But the main attraction was Brad Pitt introducing footage from World War Z, which he explained was made simply because his kids really like zombies. We believe The Human Centipede was made for similar reasons.
