World War Z review: It’s basically a travel show with zombies
by admin on Jun.10, 2013, under Latest Celebrity Gossip
So I’ll start by saying I haven’t read the book. And to be honest I think its ridiculous to compare books and films. Unless its an explicitly direct adaptation by the writer, its like comparing braille to a 3D hologram of Tupac.
The film opens stylishly with a burst of ITV ident style credits and takes no time to get to the inevitable Zombie crisis, which escalates quickly. There were horses, a man on fire, and Brad kills some guy with a trident. Before we know it we’re whisked into a frenzy of international virus finding via various flight transfers, avoiding hordes of undead monstrosities that run at full pelt. Sort of like a Ryan Air “Falaraki” documentary really, but everyone is prettier. Saying that, the flight sequence is a big highlight, if slightly predictable.
Brad leaves his family behind which is a good thing because his children are the most annoying bunch of weirdos since Hook, and his wife (Mireille Enos) has the air of a graceful trowel. The first time one of them whines “I want my blanky”, all I could imagine was what she’d look like being disembowelled by the undead.
Luckily the action sequences are plentiful. Much of the bizarre CGI we saw in the worrying trailers has been tweaked and is arresting on the big screen, but this may be due to the 3D glasses that as per make everything blurry and green. Luckily most zombies are blurry and green anyway.
The film comes to a climax in, erm, Wales, with some Holby City rejects and an unsettling cameo from “The Thick Of It”‘s Peter Capaldi who you’re expecting a tirade of “c*nt” based abuse from. Unfortunately it doesn’t materialise, but the genuine scares and Resident Evil homages fit perfectly, with just a hint of Charlie Brookers’ Dead Set. Stylistically this is all slightly jarring but much appreciated after a computer generated Jerusalem attack that looks more like “A Bugs Life” with Jews than it does a pseudo-religious dystopian safe-haven.
It felt like the style and pacing of the film was a bit warped, which relates directly to the plagued production that it has become infamous for. This doesn’t however, stop it being a very enjoyable shocker despite its identity crisis. Although for a film about billions of face eating undead fiends, there’s very little in the way of gore. Mature audiences will be gagging for some baseball bat action.
Its not a cinematic masterpiece or the blockbuster of the summer (and thank god for Brad Pitt who is consistently likeable), but if the idea of BBC’s “Holiday” featuring lots of flesh eating Jill Dando’s is your thing then a) you need therapy and b) you should see this. The dull set ups and character building get in the way of the globe trotting, break-neck bitey parts, but the sweaty palms are a fair exchange as the shocks are expertly executed.
Also the girl next to me said “wow” at every change of shot and screen transition so I’m fairly sure she was taking salvia throughout.
